Resolution revolution

Resolution Revolution!

‘Tis the season, of course. Everyone is talking about Resolutions. I’m sure you’ve seen the blogs and the posts.

Should you make one or some?
How best to make them stick?
Whether we shouldn’t be making resolutions anyway…
Is it pointless? What % of resolutions will have been abandoned by when?
And on and on…
My view is that with any big “ending” like the end of a calendar year, the training year or the school year, it is helpful to take stock, think about how things went, where you were last year? Progress made or progress you had hoped for but not made…

Of Headspace and Health

So I went to Amsterdam last weekend for a catch up and celebration with my girlfriends – we all turned 40 this year! It was a great experience, and let’s just say that we behaved in ways that wouldn’t normally fit in with the “mum life”. Like getting up at 11am, and having a 2 hour brunch. With waffles. So many waffles. But the biggest difference from being away was just the sheer amount of headspace.

Mums

Hats off to you!

So this week’s blog simply had to be about Sundays fab day out at the 5km Obstacle Course in Newbury. I am beyond proud of every single one of these wonderful women who signed up, turned up and aced this course. Many of them had never done a 5km before. Most had never done an obstacle course before. Many, when we first started talking about this, said “Nope, not for me”, but over the course of time, decided to push themselves out of their comfort zone and just do it! And they did. Some brought their families to support them but also to inspire them. And to show them: look this is what mum can do! And we all overcame the obstacles and made it out in one piece! The thing that makes me the most proud is that everyone worked hard, everyone cheered and encouraged the rest of the team, everyone found a buddy to run with. No one was left behind, the atmosphere was positive, encouraging and so brilliantly supportive. So, my dear #team.melitafitness… Hats off to you all. I am pleased as punch!

Your Willpower isn’t the Problem

I hear about will power and motivation all the time… Often in the form of: I haven’t got the will power to get to the gym 4 times a week. I need motivation to train for a 10km. I’ve joined a gym but I need motivation to get there after work. But what I’d like to be hearing, is more about habits.

How to win at mornings!

People are often surprised when they hear that I wake up at 5:30am most mornings, and wonder how I do it. So I thought I’d quickly write up my morning routine.

Back to You!

Dear Mums You’ve nearly made it. Summer is nearly over and you’ve survived the holidays! Whether it’s been joyous blissful time spent with your cherubs. Or stressful, exhausting time spent with your brats! (and I’m guessing it was a combination of both!) Give yourself a pat on the back! Because one thing is for sure. It’s exhausting. From thinking what to do for the day, and what to eat, and never ending re-stocking of the fridge… To negotiations over EVER SINGLE THING. And piles and piles of washing! ?It’s exhausting and takes up all of the time.

A self-indulgent post

Allow me, if you will, a self-indulgent post. Today is gonna be all about me! As many of you will know, for the last 9 months or so I have been getting back to an old passion – athletics. Sprints and Jumps specifically. And it is now officially the end of the athletics season and my 90+ year old coach (yes, really) has given us 3 weeks off. So it’s a good time to reflect. So it will be a self-indulgent post but many of you have told me that you enjoy hearing about this aspect of my fitness (OK maybe it was just one person!) Just as a quick background, I used to train athletics in my teens and twenties. And I was pretty good at it – national champion, national records and so on. A back injury forced me to stop and then, while I was thinking what to do about it, life happened. And so I never went back. This was one of my big regrets!

How to survive the all-inclusive holiday

So I’m writing this on the last day of an 11 day all-inclusive break in Lanzarote. Last year we did a similar break. After which I went back home with a top sun tan, super relaxed but carrying an additional 4kgs. If you know me personally you’ll know I’m quite little. 4kgs is about 8% of my total body weight. So, this year I was determined that I would not let the same thing happen.

Just because it’s in a health shop…

This blog is inspired by my handsome / awesome / useless / long-suffering (delete as appropriate) partner… So last weekend we went to town and I popped into a high-street ‘health shop’. I picked up a bunch of stuff from my usual, well-studied list. Said partner was browsing and eventually picked up a bundle of things including: – Bombay mix. – A bag of granola. – A bag of honey roasted nuts… I must’ve groaned when he caught up with me… “What? It’s a health shop right… So it’s gotta be OK?”
